everyone that works there is so helpful and everyone is always happy. You can always have a good talk with them, and the library is always being organized.

I have been to many other libraries throughout the state and can say that they all have their challenges... sometimes overworked and underpaid shows itself. I have been going to Southington library for well over 15 years, but no less than weekly in the past 13 years. The staff is helpful and pleasant. I went their with my son since he was one/two for reading groups, mommy and me, presentations (puppets) and of course reading. The library has always been clean, warm and welcoming. This is one of my favorite places to be... my husband and I spend a lot of time there and really enjoy it. They also have a used book store (great deals on books) as well as art displays and discounted museum, or activity passes throughout the state.

I had the same experience w/ the man. (Not sure if "gentleman" is the proper word to use for this person as no one seems to have a pleasant experience w/ him.) There were 2 people working the Information Desk. The lady was helping someone else, so I went up the man & asked him for help. (The mouse wasn't working, but I was still able to sign on. Didn't realize the mouse wasn't working until AFTER I signed on. I had already signed on & couldn't even sign off b/c the mouse wouldn't work. For those of you who aren't familiar w/ this, once you sign onto the computers & then sign off, you are permanently locked out & you have to get a librarian to sign you back on as a guest.) He told me to switch computers. I asked why I had to move & wondered why he couldn't help me. He said "b/c it's not working." He didn't even get up from his chair to help or to try to fix the problem. I waited for the lady to finish w/ the other people & she was able to help. (I had to switch computers. She signed me off & I was able to sign onto a different computer.) Five (5) minutes later, the man went to that computer & changed the keyboards - IT WAS THE MOUSE THAT WASN'T WORKING.

I asked to use the phone at the library and the male librarian in the research section told me I couldn't. I thought he was joking. He was very indignant and mentioned that outside people coming in were not allowed to use the phone. I'm not sure what he meant by that. He must have had another agenda. The reason for the request was a slight emergency and my cell phone was dead. It wasn't like I was asking to order pizza. I tutor students there from another school which services Southington. I happen to have been a resident for 61 years in Southington and have probably had a library card for 55. I have been tutoring at the library for many years and have asked to use the phone before and everyone I've approached has been kind, respectful and pleasant. They had no problem letting me use the phone or anyone else, as was observed. There is no sign that says we cannot use the phone, as I didn't want to break any rules. I've even tutored at the libraries in Meriden and Wallingford and they have allowed usage, also. I decided to call Ms.Smyda the following day and she was polite and agreeable to my request. If you didn't have to approach the non-smiling man in Research,-the library would be a perfect place to visit.

Librarians are supposed to be "people-oriented." What is this person doing working here if he is rude, disrespectful, & hates people?? Unbelievable.

Loud inside, even in the quiet area. More of a community center than a place where you can work
